Liberty University Summarises Its 2026 External Examiner Reports for Students

Liberty University has published a plain-language summary of its 2026 external examiner reports. External examiners are senior academics from other universities who check that marking is fair, that standards match comparable awards, and that students are treated consistently.

The headline finding is that Liberty University's online taught awards — the MBA, the MSc programmes in computing, data science, cybersecurity, public health and related fields, and the taught master's in business and education — meet the standard expected of an internationally recognised degree. Examiners sampled marked work across the grade range and found marking accurate and rubrics applied consistently.

The university has chosen to publish the criticisms as well. Examiners in two subject areas said feedback on mid-term work was sometimes too brief to act on before the next submission. One examiner said the gap between the strongest and weakest capstone projects in a single cohort was wider than it should be, suggesting some students needed earlier intervention. Another asked for clearer worked exemplars at the pass boundary.

Each point has an owner and a deadline. Feedback templates are being revised so that every piece of returned work names one concrete next step. Capstone supervision is adding a compulsory checkpoint at the one-third mark so that a weak project is caught while there is time to fix it. Exemplar banks are being extended to show pass, merit and distinction work with examiner commentary.

"An external examiner report that only contains praise is not being read properly," said the Chair of Academic Standards. "We publish the criticism because global students are entitled to know what their own university is being told."

Naledi Dube, a supply-chain analyst in Nairobi who finished the MBA capstone this year, welcomed the checkpoint change. "The problem with a capstone is that you do not know you are off track until it is expensive to change course," they said. "An earlier review would have saved me two weeks."

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours.
